Next Tuesday we’re starting to read one of the greatest poets and artists: WILLIAM BLAKE (1757-1827). To introduce the author and spend our “precious time in class” reading his poems I’m asking you to do this post, step by step.
No other poet could better embody the pure essence of Creativity, the fight against the injustices of his time and the constant wish to balance & blend the OPPOSITE FORCES of life in a PERENNIAL QUEST FOR HARMONY, which will be one of main themes running through our syllabus. I’ve found a TV documentary you may find interesting. In order to help you while listening, I’ve created some True/False questions with EDPUZZLE.
Since Blake’s message according to the documentary was: EMBRACE A WORLD OF CREATIVITY I’ve chosen this second video animation, highly visual.
I know some of you are Art lovers so sou can see The 10 best works by William Blakein this article by The Guardian. They’re stunning and highly impressive. Some of his paintings refer to Dante’s Divina Commedia and you’ll find them familiar. The Lovers’ Wirlwind Beatrice

The last video is an animation. Sheila Graber was Commissioned by the Tate Gallery (London) to create a movie for their 1977 Blake Exhibition. She was even invited down into the Sculpture Hall where she actually made the movie in public view – thus demonstrating how animation on cel ( a transparent sheet of celluloid or similar film material that can be drawn on, used in the production of cartoons) is actually done. It follows “The Poets” journey from Heaven to Hell and back… showing that, as Blake said, “Energy is Eternal delight and whether we create of destroy-it’s the same energy.”

It’s about time to start our module on the great female writer, Mary Shelley, the writer of Frankensteinand wife of the romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Two hundred years ago, on 1 January 1818, the novel Frankenstein was first published. Mary Shelley had conceived the novel two years previously, when she was 18 years old, just like you, while spending the summer in Switzerland with P.B.Shelley & Lord Byron. The weather was unusually cold and miserable because of an extraordinary event: half a world away, in Indonesia, the volcano Tambora had erupted. It was the largest volcanic eruption in human history. The ash and gas spewed by the volcano blocked the sun’s rays and cooled temperatures around the globe. Mary and her friends found the weather that year, which came to be known as ‘the year without summer’, to be perfect for sitting indoors and reading ghost stories. So they decided that each of them should write one. One night, a vision struck her imagination: in it she saw a crazy scientist giving life to a monstrous creature. FRANKENSTEIN IN MOVIES PART TWO : after reading the Extracts in class.
The following video clip is taken from “Frankenstein the 1931 classic showing the trials and tribulations of the man and his monster, directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff and Colin Clive.
The second video we watched in class is taken from Kenneth Branagh’s movie Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994 ) Sticking close to the original novel, Kenneth Branagh guides us through the story of Frankenstein’s quest for knowledge and his creature’s search for his “father”. Director: Kenneth Branagh/Release Date: 4 November 1994starring Robert de Niro, Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter.
The next video is from Victor Frankenstein, told from Igor’s perspective (2016), starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy
The next is I, Frankenstein (2014) by Stuart Beattie has turned the novel into a Gothic fantasy.
Dealing with cinematic versions of Mary Shelley’s novel, we cannot ignore the beautiful short Frankenweenie2012 – directed by Tim Burton – from Walt Disney Pictures – a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog – cast includes Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Landau. I loved it!
